A Strategic Shift: Cleats Closes as Owners Prepare for New Ventures

Change is a constant in the restaurant world, and Charleston is no exception. This week, the popular sports bar Cleats, located at The Refinery in North Charleston, officially closed its doors. While the news might be disappointing to fans of the family-friendly spot, the closure marks a strategic move by its owners, Jeremiah and Jillian Schenzel, who are consolidating their focus and preparing to introduce a brand-new concept to the city.

A New Direction for a Beloved Concept

Cleats had a relatively short, but well-regarded run in the Lowcountry dining scene. Opened in early 2024, the restaurant quickly became known for its unique take on sports bar food and its inviting, neighborhood atmosphere. The decision to close on August 31 was not a result of a lack of business, but rather a deliberate choice by the Schenzels to dedicate their time and energy to their most successful ventures. The ownership team behind Cleats is also responsible for the highly acclaimed brunch spot, Daps Breakfast & Imbibe, and they are redirecting their efforts to grow and refine that brand, along with other projects.

From Sports Bar to Sophisticated Sips

The end of Cleats is making way for an exciting new beginning. Jillian Schenzel and her business partner, Michelle Kauczka, are currently working on a new project that will bring a fresh concept to downtown Charleston: a wine bar called Sonder.

Located at 90 Cannon St., Sonder is being designed to be an inclusive space for all wine lovers. Whether you’re a connoisseur or just beginning your journey with wine, the new bar will offer a welcoming and unpretentious environment to explore different vintages and enjoy guided tastings.

The closure of Cleats marks the end of one chapter for the Schenzel family’s culinary ventures, but it also signals a clear commitment to their next chapter, which promises to bring another unique and exciting experience to Charleston’s ever-evolving food and beverage scene.
