2026 Charleston Classic Field Is Set: Six College Basketball Programs Headed to TD Arena
College basketball is returning to downtown Charleston this fall, and the field is officially set.
The 2026 Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic will take over TD Arena on Friday, November 20 and Sunday, November 22, bringing six Division I programs to the College of Charleston campus for two days of nationally relevant college hoops.
This year’s field features Dayton, Minnesota, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Utah and Virginia Tech.
For Charleston basketball fans, however, the teams aren’t the only notable part of this year’s announcement. The Charleston Classic is also changing its format for 2026.
Six Teams Are Coming to Charleston
The 2026 field includes programs from four major college basketball conferences:
- Dayton — Atlantic 10
- Minnesota — Big Ten
- Northwestern — Big Ten
- Oklahoma State — Big 12
- Utah — Big 12
- Virginia Tech — ACC
That gives Charleston five teams from power conferences alongside Dayton, one of the more recognizable basketball programs from outside the traditional power leagues.
Each program will play twice during its stay in Charleston.
The Charleston Classic Has a New Format in 2026
Fans familiar with the Charleston Classic may notice something different this year.
Rather than using the traditional eight-team tournament bracket, the 2026 Charleston Classic will feature six teams playing three standalone games on Friday and another three games on Sunday.
Each school will therefore play two games at TD Arena.
The change continues a recent evolution for the long-running event. In 2025, the Charleston Classic shifted away from its traditional format and featured two separate four-team brackets. Clemson and Utah State emerged as the respective bracket winners.
For 2026, ESPN Events is changing the setup again with the six-team, two-game format.
When Are the Games?
The Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic will be held:
Friday, November 20, 2026
Sunday, November 22, 2026
All games will be played at:
TD Arena
301 Meeting Street
Charleston, SC
Located on the College of Charleston campus in the heart of downtown, TD Arena gives the event a much more intimate atmosphere than many neutral-site college basketball tournaments.
The venue holds approximately 5,100 fans.
Matchups Have Not Been Announced Yet
We know who is coming to Charleston.
We don’t know who they’re playing — yet.
As of August 12, the official matchups, game times and television assignments have not been released.
That means fans should hold off on assuming which teams will face each other based on unofficial graphics, social media speculation or early projections.
ESPN Events is expected to announce the complete schedule closer to the tournament.
Once those matchups are revealed, we’ll know exactly which teams will face one another during Friday and Sunday’s tripleheaders.
Tickets Are Coming Soon
General admission tickets for the 2026 Charleston Classic have not yet gone on sale.
Fans can currently register for presale access through the Charleston Classic, with general ticket sales expected later in August.
VIP hospitality opportunities are also expected to become available closer to the event.
With six recognizable programs coming to a roughly 5,100-seat downtown arena, certain sessions could become especially attractive once the matchups are announced.
Several Teams Have Charleston Classic History
Some members of the 2026 field are already familiar with TD Arena.
Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech will make another trip to Charleston after previously competing in the event.
The Hokies won the Charleston Classic in 2018 and later returned in 2022, when they finished runner-up to College of Charleston.
Virginia Tech will enter the 2026-27 season with forward Amani Hansberry among its notable returning players after he averaged 14.3 points per game last season.
Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State will also be making a return trip.
The Cowboys previously finished third at the Charleston Classic in 2015 and competed in Charleston again in 2024.
Oklahoma State enters the upcoming season following a 20-win campaign and an appearance in the second round of the NIT.
Dayton
Dayton is another returning Charleston Classic participant.
The Flyers will make their third appearance in the event and arrive with a program that has produced five consecutive 20-win seasons.
An Event With Nearly Two Decades of Charleston History
The 2026 edition will mark the 18th year of the Charleston Classic, making it one of the Lowcountry’s longest-running recurring national sporting events.
Over the years, TD Arena has hosted programs from across the country while giving Charleston fans an opportunity to watch high-level college basketball without leaving downtown.
Recent Charleston Classic champions include:
2025: Clemson and Utah State
2024: Drake
2023: Houston
2022: College of Charleston
2021: St. Bonaventure
The tournament has also served as an early-season proving ground for programs that later made significant NCAA Tournament runs.
Why Is It Called the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic?
Shriners Children’s serves as the title sponsor of the Charleston Classic.
The organization operates a network of pediatric healthcare facilities specializing in areas including orthopedic care, burn treatment, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip and palate care and other complex pediatric conditions.
The partnership allows one of Charleston’s most recognizable annual basketball events to also provide national exposure for the organization’s pediatric healthcare mission.
What Happens Next?
The biggest pieces are already in place:
Six teams. Two days. TD Arena.
But several announcements are still coming.
Fans should watch for:
- Official team matchups
