Silver Dollar Is Closing After 26 Years on King Street — Here’s What’s Planned for Its Final Week
After more than 26 years on King Street, one of Charleston’s longtime nightlife fixtures is preparing to pour its final round.
Silver Dollar will permanently close on Sunday, August 23, 2026, according to an announcement shared with What’s Going On In Charleston on Tuesday.
Located at 478 King Street, Silver Dollar opened in December 1999 under owner Steve Sher and became known simply as “the Dollar” to generations of regulars.
For more than two decades, the Upper King Street bar built its identity around live music, DJs, karaoke, affordable drinks and late nights. It also became a familiar post-shift destination for members of Charleston’s hospitality industry.
Now, the bar is inviting Charleston back for one final week of celebrations before closing its doors for good.
More Than Just Another King Street Bar
Charleston nightlife has changed dramatically since Silver Dollar first opened in 1999.
Restaurants, hotels, bars and new developments have transformed Upper King Street, but Silver Dollar remained a familiar constant through much of that evolution.
According to the bar’s farewell announcement, generations of customers made Silver Dollar part of first dates, birthdays, college years, celebrations and countless late nights downtown.
Sher described the bar as his “second home” and thanked the customers, employees, DJs and musicians who helped shape it during its 26-year run.
“You built this place just as much as I did.”
For longtime Charleston residents and nightlife regulars, the closing marks the end of another piece of the King Street many people remember from years past.
One Final Week at Silver Dollar

Silver Dollar’s last night begins at 4 PM Sunday and continues until close.
DJ DougieEllis will help lead the final celebration, and the bar has issued an open invitation to DJs who have called Silver Dollar home over the years to return and play a set.
Food from Frankie Ramen will also be available throughout the final week.
The farewell message from Silver Dollar ends simply:
One last week. One last story. One last round.
Why Is Silver Dollar Closing?
As of Tuesday afternoon, the announcement did not provide a reason for the closure.
No future plans for the Silver Dollar brand or the 478 King Street location were included in the release.
