Charleston Southern Adds Women’s Flag Football as a Varsity Sport

Charleston Southern University has announced the addition of Women’s Flag Football as a varsity intercollegiate sport, with the Buccaneers expected to begin competition in Spring 2028.

A historic addition for CSU Athletics

The new program will become CSU’s 17th varsity sport, and it brings the university to 10 women’s athletic programs. CSU also noted this is the first varsity sport added since women’s soccer in 1993, marking a major milestone for the athletics department.

Why women’s flag football is growing fast

Women’s flag football has been gaining momentum across the country, and CSU’s announcement adds Charleston Southern to a growing group of NCAA Division I programs sponsoring the sport at the varsity level.

What happens next

With the inaugural season set for 2028, CSU can begin laying the groundwork for recruiting, staffing, and future scheduling. CSU has also indicated that scheduling discussions can begin with existing Division I flag football programs as more schools add varsity teams.

Sound off, Lowcountry

This is a big win for women’s sports — and a sign of where college athletics is heading.
