Delemar Highway Could See Major $110M Expansion As Dorchester County Growth Continues
One of Dorchester County’s major growth corridors could be headed for a major road expansion.
Dorchester County is moving forward with planning for improvements to Delemar Highway, focusing on the stretch between Clubhouse Road and Clay Field Trail in the Summerville / Ashley Ridge / Summers Corner area.
The proposed project would widen that section of Delemar Highway from two lanes to a five-lane roadway as the county prepares for future traffic growth, nearby development, and safety concerns along the corridor.
What Is Being Proposed?
According to Dorchester County’s project materials, the Delemar Highway improvement plan includes:
A five-lane road section, two travel lanes in each direction, a center two-way left-turn lane, bike lanes, a shared-use path, a sidewalk, drainage improvements, shoulder improvements, and a roundabout at Clubhouse Road.
The county says the goal is to reduce future congestion, improve safety, and better accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians.
A separate developer-funded project is also planned for the stretch between Clay Field Trail and Ashley Ridge High School, meaning the larger Delemar corridor is seeing multiple transportation updates tied to continued growth in the area.
Why Is This Happening?
The simple answer: growth.
Delemar Highway sits in one of Dorchester County’s fast-growing areas, near Ashley Ridge High School, Summers Corner, Clubhouse Road, and expanding residential development.
County officials have said traffic along the corridor is expected to increase significantly over the next few decades. Current traffic is around 9,000 vehicles per day, with projections showing more than 33,000 vehicles per day by 2050.
That kind of growth is why the county is looking ahead now, even though the project is still in the planning and preliminary design phase.
What Is The Cost?
The estimated cost for the Delemar Highway improvements is approximately $110.4 million.
However, there is an important detail residents should know: official project materials state that the project is currently only funded through preliminary design. That means additional funding would still need to be identified before the project can fully move forward into later phases like right-of-way acquisition, final design, and construction.
In other words, this is a major project on the radar, but it is not a “shovels in the ground tomorrow” situation.
Public Feedback And Resident Concerns
Dorchester County held a public information meeting in March 2026 at Ashley Ridge High School to share preliminary plans and collect feedback.
As with many road widening projects in the Lowcountry, the conversation is not just about traffic. Residents have also raised concerns about potential property impacts, rural character, noise, land, trees, and how continued development is changing the area.
That is what makes this project bigger than a simple road update.
For some residents, the widening could mean safer roads, better traffic flow, sidewalks, and bike access. For others, it represents another sign of how quickly the Summerville and Dorchester County area is changing.
Why It Matters
Delemar Highway is becoming another example of the growth conversation happening across the Charleston region.
The Lowcountry is growing. More homes are being built. More cars are on the road. More families are moving farther into Dorchester County. And now local infrastructure is being asked to catch up.
The question is not just whether Delemar Highway needs improvements. The bigger question is how Dorchester County balances traffic, safety, development, property concerns, and quality of life as growth continues pushing west.
For residents near Ashley Ridge, Summers Corner, Clubhouse Road, and the surrounding area, this is a project worth watching closely.
Quick Facts
Project: Delemar Highway Improvements
Area: Clubhouse Road to Clay Field Trail
County: Dorchester County
Estimated Cost: Approximately $110.4 million
Proposed Improvements: Five-lane widening, bike lanes, shared-use path, sidewalk, roundabout, drainage and safety improvements
Current Status: Preliminary design / planning phase
Funding Note: Currently funded through preliminary design only; additional funding would be needed for later phases
Bottom Line
Delemar Highway could see a major transformation in the years ahead.
The project is being planned as Dorchester County prepares for future traffic growth, but the proposal also brings familiar Lowcountry questions about land, safety, development, and what happens when rural roads become growth corridors.
This is one to keep on the local growth watch list.
