Goose Creek Adopts New Golf Cart Law — Here’s What You Need to Know

Goose Creek residents, take note! The City Council passed new golf cart regulations on August 12, 2025, to align with the new state law. These changes are designed to improve safety for everyone on our local roads.

It’s important for all golf cart owners and drivers to be aware of the new rules.

  • Roads: Golf carts are only permitted on secondary roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less. (Carts may cross intersections with roads that have a higher speed limit).
  • Safety Belts: Any passenger under the age of 12 must wear a fastened seat belt or be in a proper car or booster seat.
  • Seating: All passengers must remain seated while the golf cart is in motion.
  • Night Driving: You can drive your golf cart at night, but only if it has working headlights and taillights and meets all other passenger requirements.
  • Penalties: A violation of this ordinance could result in a fine of up to $500, up to 30 days in jail, or both.

Remember, these state laws also apply to all golf carts on public roads:

  • The driver must be at least 16 years old and have a valid driver’s license.
  • The golf cart must be registered with the SCDMV and have liability insurance.
  • A registration sticker must be visible on the windshield.
