Chuy’s Is Coming to North Charleston, Replacing Bahama Breeze on Rivers Avenue

The longtime Bahama Breeze location is expected to close in late October before reopening as the popular Tex-Mex chain in November.

North Charleston is getting a new Tex-Mex restaurant — and we now know what will replace Bahama Breeze on Rivers Avenue.

Chuy’s is coming to 7811 Rivers Ave., taking over the building currently occupied by Bahama Breeze as part of Darden Restaurants’ nationwide phaseout of the Caribbean-inspired chain.

The conversion has now been tied specifically to Chuy’s, with the restaurant expected to close as Bahama Breeze on October 26 and reopen as Chuy’s on November 18, 2026, according to the latest conversion schedule reported by USA TODAY.

And there’s another strong sign that preparations are already underway: Chuy’s posted a Restaurant Manager opening on August 19 for 7811 Rivers Ave. — the exact address of the North Charleston Bahama Breeze.

The mystery surrounding the Rivers Avenue location is over

Back in February, Darden announced that it would eliminate the Bahama Breeze brand and convert 14 of its remaining locations into other restaurants within the company’s portfolio.

North Charleston’s 7811 Rivers Ave. restaurant was among the locations selected for conversion, but at the time, Darden did not reveal which brand would replace it.

That left several possibilities.

Darden’s portfolio includes Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Yard House, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, The Capital Grille, Seasons 52, Eddie V’s — and Chuy’s.

Now we have the answer.

Bahama Breeze is becoming Chuy’s.

What is Chuy’s?

If you haven’t eaten at one before, Chuy’s is an Austin-born Tex-Mex restaurant chain founded in 1982.

The company specializes in made-from-scratch Tex-Mex, with a menu built around items such as enchiladas, tacos, burritos, fajitas, queso and margaritas. The restaurants are also known for their intentionally colorful and eclectic interiors rather than using the exact same design at every location.

Darden acquired Chuy’s in 2024 in a deal valued at approximately $605 million. At the time of the acquisition, Chuy’s operated more than 100 restaurants across 15 states.

Darden reported 110 company-owned Chuy’s restaurants at the end of its 2026 fiscal year.

Bahama Breeze will remain open for now

The change won’t happen immediately.

The current schedule calls for the North Charleston Bahama Breeze to continue operating until October 26.

After a brief conversion period, the new Chuy’s is expected to open November 18.

That means Charleston-area diners still have nearly two months to visit Bahama Breeze before the Rivers Avenue restaurant makes the switch.

The dates are currently listed as expected closure and reopening dates, so they could still shift as construction and conversion work progresses.

Part of the end of Bahama Breeze

The North Charleston conversion is part of a much larger change happening across Darden.

In February, the company announced it had completed a strategic review of Bahama Breeze and determined the brand was no longer a strategic priority. Fourteen locations were designated for permanent closure while another 14 — including North Charleston — were selected to become other Darden concepts.

Darden has since been working through those conversions around the country.

For Charleston, that transition will bring a completely different concept to one of Rivers Avenue’s most recognizable restaurant corridors.

And judging by the management hiring already underway, Chuy’s appears to be preparing for its Lowcountry arrival now.
