Dillard’s Plans to Close Citadel Mall Store After More Than Three Decades in Charleston
Another longtime piece of West Ashley’s shopping history is preparing to say goodbye as Dillard’s plans to close its Citadel Mall location.
The department store at 2066 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard is preparing to close after approximately 34 years in the Charleston market.
According to a November 6 report from The Post and Courier, notices announcing the planned closure appeared at the store this week.
An exact closing date has not yet been announced, and the location remains listed on Dillard’s official website.

A Familiar Name in West Ashley Shopping
For generations of Charleston-area shoppers, Dillard’s has been a familiar destination for clothing, cosmetics, shoes, home furnishings and special-occasion purchases.
The retailer arrived in the Charleston market in 1992, taking over the former Thalhimers department store locations at Citadel Mall and Northwoods Mall.
Dillard’s subsequently moved into a larger building at Citadel Mall in 1994, becoming one of the shopping center’s major anchors.
The West Ashley location has remained a recognizable part of the mall through decades of changes in Charleston’s retail landscape.
Dillard’s also operates a store at Northwoods Mall in North Charleston, which remains listed on the company’s website.
Another Change for Citadel Mall
The announcement comes during a significant transition for Citadel Mall.
Opened in July 1981, the shopping center was once one of the Charleston region’s primary retail destinations, anchored by major department stores and surrounded by smaller shops.
Over time, the mall has experienced considerable turnover as shopping habits changed and several longtime retailers departed.
Now, the property is also becoming an increasingly important healthcare destination.
In December 2025, MUSC Health acquired a substantial portion of the mall property for approximately $83.5 million, with plans to expand medical care, education and research facilities in West Ashley.
The acquisition included existing mall space and areas previously occupied by other retailers.
Dillard’s, Belk and Target were not part of that purchase, as their anchor-store properties have separate ownership arrangements.
No direct connection between Dillard’s closure plans and MUSC’s acquisition has been established.
What Happens Next?
For now, several important questions remain unanswered.
Dillard’s has not publicly confirmed a final operating day for the West Ashley location or announced what will happen to the department store property after closing.
The store continues to appear in both the retailer’s online directory and Citadel Mall’s shopping information.
Customers interested in visiting should check directly with the store for the latest operating hours and closing information.
The planned departure marks another significant change for a shopping center that has been part of West Ashley life for more than four decades.
As Citadel Mall continues to evolve, the question remains: What should come next for the spaces once occupied by some of Charleston’s most recognizable retailers?
