Charleston Invites Residents to Discuss Zoning Changes at October 22 Peninsula Plan Open Studio

October 20, 2026 | Local Updates / Development

Charleston residents will have another opportunity this Thursday to learn about the city’s long-term plans for the peninsula, including ongoing work to rewrite its zoning regulations.

The City of Charleston is hosting a Peninsula Plan Open Studio on Thursday, October 22, from 3 to 6 PM, at the Civic Design Center, located at 85 Calhoun Street.

This week’s featured topic is the Zoning Code Rewrite, an initiative intended to modernize the rules governing development across the city.

Why Does This Matter?

Zoning regulations influence how land can be used, where different types of housing and businesses can be built, and how new development fits into existing neighborhoods.

Charleston’s ongoing rewrite is examining issues including housing options, flood resilience, development standards, and the city’s changing growth patterns.

These issues connect directly to the broader Charleston Peninsula Plan, which aims to guide the peninsula’s future from the Battery to the Neck.

What Can Residents Expect Thursday?

The October 22 open studio will allow residents to:

  • Review planning work currently underway.
  • Speak directly with city project staff.
  • Learn more about the Zoning Code Rewrite.
  • Explore how the proposed planning initiatives relate to the peninsula’s future.

The session is a drop-in event, allowing visitors to attend at any point during the three-hour window.

This is an informational open studio, not a final vote to approve new zoning regulations.

What’s Next for the Peninsula Plan?

The Peninsula Plan is currently in its second phase, focused on building consensus and moving toward adoption.

The City plans to present a complete draft in November.

Another open studio is scheduled for October 29, featuring draft plan content from across the project.
