Charleston Is Phasing Out Downtown Parking Meters: Here’s What Drivers Need to Know

The City of Charleston is transitioning to ParkMobile for on-street parking across the peninsula, gradually replacing traditional parking meters through 2027.

Downtown Charleston’s familiar parking meters are on their way out.

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, the City of Charleston announced plans to transition on-street parking on the peninsula to ParkMobile, allowing drivers to pay through a mobile app, website, or telephone instead of relying on physical meters.

The transition will begin over the coming weeks, with existing parking meters gradually removed over the next several months. City officials expect the change to be substantially completed during the second quarter of 2027.

How Will Downtown Parking Work?

Under the new system, drivers will be able to:

  • Pay by smartphone: Use the ParkMobile app to start a parking session.
  • Pay online or by phone: Drivers without smartphones can use alternative payment options, including a telephone-based service.
  • Enter their parking zone: Posted signs will display zone numbers corresponding to parking locations.
  • Receive reminders: The system can notify drivers when their parking sessions are about to expire.
  • Extend parking remotely: Drivers may add time without returning to their vehicles, provided they do not exceed posted parking limits.

Parking sessions will be associated with vehicle license plates, eliminating the need to display a receipt on the dashboard.

What Happens to the Existing Meters?

Don’t stop paying at the meters just yet.

According to the city, meter removal will begin on the eastern side of the Charleston peninsula.

Meters elsewhere on the peninsula will continue accepting payments until they are officially removed from service.

Drivers should follow the payment instructions and posted parking restrictions at their specific location throughout the transition.

Why Is Charleston Making the Change?

The city says the new system is intended to simplify parking payments, reduce reliance on aging equipment, and improve turnover in downtown parking spaces.

The changes are also part of Charleston’s broader tourism management strategy, which seeks to address the challenges that residents and visitors face in a busy downtown area.

City officials believe a more consistent parking system will make it easier for people to find spaces near businesses, restaurants, workplaces, and attractions.

When Will the Transition Be Complete?

The city expects the changeover to be substantially completed by the second quarter of 2027.

Drivers who already have ParkMobile accounts can continue using them.

Residents and visitors who regularly park downtown may want to familiarize themselves with the platform before the transition reaches their usual parking areas.

Important: This announcement does not mean downtown street parking is becoming free. Drivers must continue following payment requirements, time limits, and posted signs.

What Do You Think?

Will switching to ParkMobile make parking downtown more convenient, or would you rather keep traditional parking meters?
