Chilly Bear Festival Brings Charleston Nostalgia, Family Fun and Scholarships to North Charleston
One of Charleston’s most nostalgic summertime traditions is getting a celebration of its own.
The Chilly Bear Festival will bring families, entrepreneurs and community members together at Jenkins on the Ashley on Sunday, August 9, for an all-ages event built around memories, music, culture and giving back to the next generation. Organizers describe the experience as an ultimate summer family reunion with a distinctly Charleston feel.
More Than a Frozen Treat
For many Charleston residents, chilly bears bring back memories of neighborhood candy ladies, hot summer afternoons and inexpensive frozen treats shared with friends.
The festival takes that familiar piece of local nostalgia and expands it into a seven-hour community celebration. Rather than simply centering the treat itself, the event is designed to highlight family, culture, entrepreneurship and the people helping carry those traditions forward.
Attendees can expect music, community connections and activities designed for multiple generations. The event is open to all ages and runs from 1 to 8 p.m.
Youth Entrepreneurs Take Center Stage
A major part of the Chilly Bear Festival’s mission is creating space for young people.
Youth vendors and kid entrepreneurs will be able to showcase their products, ideas and developing businesses before a community audience. The festival will also offer free hair braiding while appointments remain available.
By combining entertainment with entrepreneurship, organizers are giving younger attendees more than a day out. They are providing an opportunity to be seen, supported and encouraged.
$3,000 in Scholarships Will Be Awarded
The festival will also give back through two scholarship opportunities.
The Minnie Ethel Legacy College Scholarship will award $2,000, while the China Berry Kiddie Entrepreneur Scholarship will award $1,000 to support a young entrepreneur.
Those awards reinforce the larger purpose behind the event: celebrating Charleston culture while investing in the generation responsible for carrying it forward.
