Bareo Is Launching a Japanese-Inspired Brunch in Downtown Charleston
Charleston certainly isn’t hurting for brunch options.
But Bareo is about to give the city something a little different.
The Spring Street restaurant will launch a new Japanese-inspired brunch service on Thursday, September 3, offering a daytime menu centered around savory Japanese breakfast flavors rather than the pancakes, chicken and waffles and Benedict-heavy approach typically associated with brunch.
Brunch will be available Thursday through Sunday from 12–4 p.m. at Bareo, located at 73 Spring Street in Charleston’s Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood.
Inspired by Travel — Not the Traditional Brunch Playbook
Bareo is the latest restaurant project from Chef Nikko Cagalanan and co-owner Paula Kramer, the team behind Kultura.
The idea for the new brunch came from something the pair regularly seek out while traveling: Japanese breakfast.
Instead of simply adding eggs to Bareo’s existing menu and calling it brunch, the restaurant is building the service around the types of savory breakfast sets Cagalanan and Kramer have enjoyed during their travels.
That approach fits naturally with Bareo, which already blends Filipino influences with Japanese flavors and techniques.
The restaurant opened earlier this year in Kultura’s former Spring Street space as a casual neighborhood concept built around food, drinks and gathering.

What’s on Bareo’s New Brunch Menu?
The centerpiece of the brunch menu will be a Japanese breakfast tray.
Guests will be able to choose between steak or grilled eel, served with:
- Cucumber salad
- Seaweed salad
- Soy-marinated egg
- Rice
- Soup
Bareo’s regular menu of dumplings and other favorites will also remain available à la carte during brunch.
That gives diners the option of ordering the full breakfast experience or mixing brunch dishes with some of the items already associated with the restaurant.
The Drinks Are Getting the Bareo Treatment, Too
The bar isn’t sitting brunch out.
Bareo plans to offer sake bombs, mimosa riffs and specialty cocktails designed to match the new daytime menu.
One of the drinks already announced is the Rukia Kuchiki Cucumber Chiller, made with cucumber, lychee and sparkling sake.
And if you’ve been to Bareo before, you already know the atmosphere is part of the experience.
Expect plenty of K-pop on the speakers as the restaurant turns its daytime service into something closer to a casual neighborhood party than a formal brunch.
Another Addition to Charleston’s Growing Brunch Scene
Charleston has no shortage of places serving brunch, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.
Bareo’s decision to serve its new menu Thursday through Sunday gives it a slightly different lane.
It also gives downtown diners another daytime option before the traditional weekend brunch rush begins.
More importantly, the menu isn’t trying to mimic what dozens of other Charleston restaurants already do.
Between the Japanese breakfast trays, grilled eel, sake-based drinks and Bareo’s Filipino-Japanese identity, this is one of the more distinctive new brunch concepts to arrive in Charleston this year.
About Bareo
Bareo opened in February 2026 at the former Kultura location on Spring Street.
Its name is inspired by the Tagalog word “baryo,” meaning neighborhood, reflecting the restaurant’s focus on food, friendship and community.
The menu brings together Filipino influences and Japanese-inspired dishes, including dumplings, onigiri, noodle dishes and kakigōri-style shaved ice.
